袖なしの服としてのベストは、イングランド王のチャールズ二世(1630 - 1685)が、贅沢で退廃的になっていた宮廷の男性の服装を抑制するため、倹約を促す目的で導入したものです。
しかし皮肉なことに、ベストは贅沢品として広まっていき、装飾を施したものが中心となっていきました。
