premiseは「前提」や「敷地付きの建物」を意味する単語ですが、この2つの意味は別の語源からできた意味ではありません。
15世紀初頭、法的な書類においてpremiseは「前に述べたこと」の意味で使われていました。
証書や遺言において、「前に述べたこと」は家や建物を指していることが多かったため、そこからpremiseに「敷地付きの建物」の意味が生じました。premiseの-miseの部分は、「ミッション」として外来語になっているmissionと同じ語源です。
